Hand Forged Medieval Penannular Brooch Twist Cloak Pin This large, hand forged penannular cloak pin is inspired by brooches used in Ireland and Britain during the early medieval period. Brooches initially developed from the Roman clasp or fibula. The brooches were worn by both men and women, usually singly at the shoulder by men and on the breast by women. In the severe climate of northern Europe, the brooch became the typical ornament of the era, because it normally functioned as a fastening for a heavy tunic or cloak. This cloak pin is practical and beautifully hand made to be used. The penannular type is a simple and efficient way of fastening loosely woven cloth.
